I recently read Louise Kennedy's The End of the World is a Cul de Sac and it was a perfect pairing with Keegan's work. Highly recommend!

Ooh I think I remember seeing you read this! Sounds really interesting, I’m adding it to the list! I love the title

I am still yet to read any Keegan !! I wonder if I should start with this one. Irish writing is always so damn good - I have ‘Old Gods Time’ by Sebastian Barry on my shelf which I’m expecting to be the definition of Catholic trauma x

The nursery also sounds incredibly interesting?! I really enjoy weird motherhood books idk why maybe it’s something that goes against the grain about romanticising being a mother lmao.

Congrats on such a fruitful film month! I’m dying to see Society of Snow and Anatomy of a Fall (my wifi is still down and I am living in wifi less black hole it’s so tragic I feel like I’m in a sitcom bc being without wifi for 14 days is that outrageous)- also really want to see Zone of Interest (with no chicken tenders being eaten next to me. I’m not sure how anyone can eat during a film about the Holocaust? It’s inherently distressing how are your taste buds working?)

Also idk if u saw it in my post yesterday but I saw poor things last weekend! Loved it a lot - Emma stone slay! But I did also think about what you said to me a month ago about it and I totally agree - she gave sterile sex doll vibes at times. A friend of mine says the book is less sterile male gaze sex doll which it is so interesting as to why Lanthimos decided to change it a bit? Ok sorry this comment is so long. 🩵 feeling satisfyingly consumed post consumption piece x

I love a long commentary do not apologize !! I wish I had read more Keegan so I could weigh in here but I’ve heard good things about Foster and might do that next? Haven’t read Old Gods Time but the name alone 🤣 at my university I took an Irish women’s lit class and it was 80% catholic trauma tbh

I love love weird motherhood books too ! It’s definitely because it counteracts the romantic idea of motherhood, which no mother I know would ever tell you is true. And just the idea that all women are primed for motherhood — we set women up to fail. “Bad” moms are just moms. With Teeth by Kristen Arnett and Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth immediately come to mind, and I want to read Nightbitch before the movie is released!

No wifi for that long sounds impossible honestly, treat yourself to a movie once you’ve been restored to modernity. Society of the snow sent me down a real Wikipedia rabbit hole so you’ll need top internet speeds for that lolol also yes I could not have eaten during that, I could barely sip my water lol

I haven’t seen it yet but running to your latest post, I’m behind !! I didn’t realize that about the book vs. the movie but that’s interesting. I wonder if it’s just a case of “sex sells” but idk I hope it was more than that! Even still, excellent movie and Emma stone can do no wrong ?!

I’ve heard good things about Foster too so maybe we can both do that next! Hahaha the name Old Gods Time tells us enough 🤣 that must’ve been such an interesting lit class!!! Catholic trauma does seem to dominate most Irish lit lmao.

Yess I love anything that counteracts the romantic idea of motherhood. Completely agree that society tries to prime all women for motherhood. These comments around the ideal mother are making me think of the book ‘A Little Luck’ by Claudia piñero I think you’d enjoy it! Will add Teeth and Mothering to my tbr immediately. I’ve heard sooo much weirdness about Nightbitch - I didn’t know a movie was coming! Appreciate the intel.

I will be treating myself to a movie MARATHON once’s it’s back. Lmao the first time I heard of the accident that society of the snow is based on I was on the internet for HOURS. It was late at night and my partner was amazed at how fascinated I was and I was like Patrick (his name) this is insanely interesting I’ll be googling it for the foreseeable future! And now there’s a film! I’m all over it. I wonder how the survivors feel about the film today.

Lanthimos doesn’t seem like a sex sells guy? But idk that’s just an initial judgement. At first I thought maybe they thought some of the topics in the book would be too complex to explore but then I was like hang on a minute, the whole film is a complex topic so I don’t think it could’ve been that? I loved it so much and couldn’t stop laughing! I did not expect it to be so funny. I think any film that can make you so uncomfortable, tackle a really outrageous topic and make you laugh is a very impressive film. Emma Stone supremacy fr 👑

Let’s do it !! To both Foster and Poor Things lol

Also I’ve heard of A Little Luck but didn’t know what it was about, adding immediately!! Your partner and mine are both equally horrified at our google searches but plane crashes are top 5 favorite internet holes for me hahahah help

Also so true on mr yorgos and 100% agree!! I am going to google some interviews etc with him and Emma stone and get to the bottom on this 🧐

re: not eating chicken tenders during a Holocaust movie

we went to Brooklyn Academy of Music instead of our usual Alamo to see Zone of Interest for this very reason. HOWEVER when i went to see All of Strangers at Alamo a couple weeks ago i did have Chips and Queso. got the munching over with quick but i was starving and had to just mentally compartmentalize a bit.

Lmao I love that you actively tried to avoid it and I shall do the same in the future … though tbh I have to do the quick eating every time I’m at Alamo bc it’s rare that I DONT feel supremely awkward gnawing on my little chicken tenders

I’m sure Foster is on your list. It was very good and probably requires two quick reads, because the first time, you’re worried about something horrible happening.

The House of Mirth is another great Edith Wharton.

It is! I’m intrigued by the suspense now that you mention it. I’ll definitely have to read that one.

House of Mirth looks great! I’ve never actually read it

What you said about maintaining long distance relations hit me. I have a friend on the other side of the world whom I used to go to cafes with to chat about anything and everything, and now we send each other voice messages. We spend hours doing this and I'm so grateful for this beautiful and intimate act.

Yes absolutely! The ways we have to show up for each other change when we’re long distance but they are just as precious and meaningful 🥹
